In order to better inform our patients and their families, this section offers resources on minimally invasive surgery (MIS), with a focus on selected procedures performed using the da Vinci® Surgical System.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

• Minimally invasive surgery (also known as MIS, laparoscopic, or endoscopic surgery) allows physicians to perform many types of surgical procedures through 1-2 cm incisions. For most patients, a minimally invasive approach offers substantially less pain, less blood loss and a much shorter recovery. Other advantages include reduced need for blood transfusions, minimal scarring, less risk of infection, shorter hospital stays and quicker return to normal activities.

• Recent advancements in minimally invasive surgical technologies mean that today's patients have a broader range of alternatives to conventional open surgery than patients did just 10 years ago. These advancements include the da Vinci Surgical System, which is providing patients with new, minimally invasive surgical procedures that offer significant advantages over traditional "open" surgeries. These robotic-assisted minimally invasive procedures – available to treat conditions as diverse as obesity, heart disease and prostate cancer – can benefit patients with less pain, discomfort, blood loss and a quicker return to normal activities.

Cardiac Applications

Open-chest surgical incision

Robotic-assisted minimally invasive cardiac procedures avoid the drawbacks of traditional heart surgery, including blood loss, pain and scarring that typically result from cutting through the breastbone and opening the ribs. The da Vinci® System offers breakthrough capabilities that enable surgeons to operate through smaller incisions made between the ribs.
The daVinci surgical incision

As a result, the da Vinci Surgical System is changing the practice of cardiac surgery as it's known today. Data suggests that recovery time, pain and trauma are reduced significantly through this less invasive approach.

For most patients, minimally invasive cardiac procedures performed with the da Vinci Surgical System can offer numerous potential benefits over open-chest surgery, including:

• Shorter hospital stay
• Less pain and scarring
• Less risk of infection
• Less blood loss and fewer transfusions
• Faster recovery
• Quicker return to normal activities
